Then He said, “I will make all My goodness pass before you, and I will proclaim the name of the Lord before you. I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion.” But you cannot see My face; for no man shall see Me, and live.” And the Lord said, “Here is a place by Me, and you shall stand on the rock. So it shall be, while My glory passes by, that I will put you in the cleft of the rock, and will cover you with My hand, and you shall see My back; but My face shall not be seen.
- Exodus 33:19-23
In Exodus 33 we honestly see one of the most beautiful intimate moments between Abba Father and Moses. Moses spent 40 days and nights on the mountain with Abba Father and also fasted 40 days and nights, without any food or drink (Exodus 34:28)
Then Moses makes the humble request:
'And he said, “Please, show me Your glory.”'
- Exodus 33:18
Moses was blessed to enjoy such intimate communion with God as ever any man had the privilege of, but still, he desired a further acquaintance.
Moses had wonderfully prevailed with God for one favor after another, and the success of his prayers emboldened him to go on still to seek God, seeking more and more of Him.
But God graciously denied Moses’s request,
” But He said, “You cannot see My face; for no man shall see Me, and live.” '
- Exodus 33:20
A full discovery of the glory of God would quite overpower the capabilities of any mortal man in his existent state. For we are weak, unworthy and guilty and could not but dread it. We simply would not be able to bear it and live.
It is in compassion to our infirmities that God holds back the beauty of His glory. The knowledge of the true I AM should be waited for. This is truly an honor reserved for the future.
'Beloved, now we are children of God; and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be, but we know that when He is revealed, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is. '
- 1 John 3:2
Abba Father will have us walk by faith and not by sight in this world (2 Corinthians 5:7) Faith also comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God (Romans 10:17)
So, in the meantime let us enjoy and adore the beauty of Abba Father of what we do know now in this present day and let us not stop in pursuing knowledge of our Bridegroom.
Faith to believe God’s Word is the very essence of receiving the promises that Abba Father says we can and will have. We need to trust and rely on Him.
It is also amazing to see the obedience that Moses had towards Abba Father and how he truly lived a crucified live. Let this also be our aim and goal in life: to listen to our Father and obey Him. To get to know Him, intimately. And love Him with an agapé love.
I pray that you will receive favor and mercy in the very sight of Abba Father and that He will show you the way to go. That you will truly get to know Him [progressively become more deeply and intimately acquainted with Him, perceiving and recognizing and understanding more strongly and clearly]. And that His presence shall be with you wherever you go. Leading and guiding you in all things present and to come. (adapted from Exodus 33:13 – 14)
Rock of ages – a hymn
Rock of Ages, cleft for me,
Let me hide myself in Thee;
Let the water and the blood,
From Thy riven side which flowed,
Be of sin the double cure,
Save me from its guilt and power.
Not the labor of my hands
Can fulfill Thy law’s demands;
Could my zeal no respite know,
Could my tears forever flow,
All could never sin erase,
Thou must save, and save by grace.
Nothing in my hands I bring,
Simply to Thy cross I cling;
Naked, come to Thee for dress,
Helpless, look to Thee for grace:
Foul, I to the fountain fly,
Wash me, Savior, or I die.
While I draw this fleeting breath,
When mine eyes shall close in death,
When I soar to worlds unknown,
See Thee on Thy judgment throne,
Rock of Ages, cleft for me,
Let me hide myself in Thee.
Mercy, peace, and love be
multiplied to you,
