Playing the harlot

A Bible study about Hosea & Gomer

by Alrinda Mulder

“Therefore, behold, I will allure her, Will bring her into the wilderness, And speak comfort to her. “And it shall be, in that day,” Says the Lord , “ That you will call Me ‘My Husband,’ And no longer call Me ‘My Master,’'

-Hosea 2:14,16

We read about Gomer in the Book of Hosea. The prostitute, that God instructed Prophet Hosea to marry.

Gomer represents us, a sinner and

Hosea represents Yeshua, our Salvation and Redeemer.

Hosea the prophet lived during the divided kingdom. He was a prophet of the Northern kingdom, named Israel.

Hosea’s prophecy gave Israel an example of their spiritual idolatry and harlotry towards Father Yahweh, but yet it still portrays God’s love for Israel. Despite their rejection and spiritual infidelity God still loved His people.

God said in Hosea 2:5 that Israel played the harlot. Israel forgot and left their first love, Yahweh.

It can be at times painful to read the Book of Hosea, because of Hosea’s own intense, personal involvement. The tragic details of Hosea’s personal life and because of this, Hosea has been known as the broken-hearted prophet.

Hosea’s sorrow provides a good illustration of the broken-hearted Abba Father in His relationship with sinful humankind.

Out of obedience to God, Hosea marries the prostitute Gomer to portray a literal symbol of the love relationship between Abba Father and Israel.

We see that Gomer refuses to change her ways for her husband and children, but still every time Hosea goes and redeems her from her immoral and dishonourable lifestyle that she so desperately clings to.

Hosea means: Salvation

And this is beautiful because we know that whenever we read the word Salvation in Scriptures it means exactly the same as Yeshua.

From a human perspective, it is easy to wonder why did Hosea continue to punish himself in this way? Many may think why not just cut his losses and rid of this woman who refuses to be a faithful wife and mother?

But the answer is simple. Obedience to Abba Father. Hosea knew that his life did not belong to him alone. He has given his heart and soul to Abba Father. Yahweh called him to be a prophet, therefore it did not so much matter to him how he felt but to be uttermost obedient to the voice of Yahweh.

Paul also writes in Scriptures the following:

'For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.'

-1Corinthians 6:20

Meaning that we do not belong to ourselves, but to God. We are His.

Hosea knew that God called him to be a living metaphor and he obeyed, regardless of the personal cost.

Hosea also illustrates the heartaches that may come from following the call of Abba Father as His children, but also as His bride. We, as His Beloved, His Bride to be, also continue to pray and minister to those who have gone astray from Abba Father, even when it hurts at times, knowing that God did the same for us.

Gomer means: Complete

This is the picture of God’s unfailing love and mercy towards us: That Salvation completes the work.

The names of their children:

Jezreel means: God scatters

The name signifies the great slaughter that God will bring on the house of Jehu, because of the violent acts which were committed.

Lo-Ruhamah means: not loved

God’s anger and rejection of Isreal.

Lo- Ammi means: not my people

God’s rejection.

Throughout the Book of Hosea, we see the cycle of unfaithfulness (Gomer) and unconditional love (Hosea) (Abba Father) continues.

As children of God, this clearly shows us that HE never gives up on us, but it will always remain our choice to choose Him and to serve Him.

At one stage we see that Hosea even have to buy back his own wife. But this shows us, that love cannot be bought, because Yeshua already paid the highest price. We need to receive it as a gift and be changed and humbled by it. Love is a working word and not about feelings. We show love. We have to be love.

Hosea continues to show love and treat Gomer with love even after what she did time and time again, over and over again.

Yahweh also said in Hosea 14:4:

“I will love them freely.”

We see Gomer is portraying a few things.

Let’s have a look:

1) Rebellion (Spirit of Rebellion):

“For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, And stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because you have rejected the word of the Lord,”

-1Samuel 15:23

Rebellion is rooted in deception and does not trust God or wait on God or rely on God for His provision. Rebellion is a deception that serves the self.

Feminism is a type of rebellion against the order of God.

2) Idolatry (Spiritual Idolatry)

Anything that we put above Abba Father that is influencing our time and relationship with Him is idolatry.

Examples are:

Television (what you watch and see = you agree with), cellphones, sports, work etc. Of course there are many more.

‘’And God spoke all these words, saying: “I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. “You shall have no other gods before Me. “You shall not make for yourself a carved image—any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; you shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me, but showing mercy to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments.'

-Exodus 20:1-6

A.W Tozer said:

“Grace will save a man, but it will not save him and his idol.”

3) Adultery (Spiritual Adultery)

'Adulterers and adulteresses! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God. '

-James 4:4

Anything that leads you to be unfaithful to your Bridegroom or anything that you lust after in this world causing you to sin, participating in things that God hates and warns against, this is committing spiritual adultery/harlotry.

'Nevertheless I have this against you, that you have left your first love. '

-Revelation 2:4

The moral of the story is, that we are all in the same love relationship with Abba Father that is portrayed here in the Book of Hosea. It will always remain our decision to return to our first love or not.

We have to go boldly unto the throne of grace and ask Abba Father to reveal any rebellion, idol worship or adultery in our lives. If anything is keeping us away from an intimate relationship with Him. Ask Him to take His all-consuming fire and to burn away anything that is standing between you and Him that is keeping you away from intimacy with Him.

We might fall again and again, but Abba Father’s promises remain true and steadfast and one being that He will never leave you, nor forsake you.

He wants you to choose Him, choose life overflowing in the abundance of His grace, love and mercy.

Scriptures tell us:

'If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. '

-1John 1:9

'Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord, '

-Acts 3:19

Let us not forget who Abba Father is for me and for you, which is so beautifully written here is Isaiah 54:5:

'For your Maker is your husband, The Lord of hosts is His name; And your Redeemer is the Holy One of Israel; He is called the God of the whole earth. For the Lord has called you,” Says your God.'

-Isaiah 54:5-6

Love, peace and joy be yours

In abundance in Yeshua,

Shalom & God bless
