According to scripture, these are the events or process of a Christian birth and the path to be followed to walk with Jesus Christ and the beginning of an intimate relationship with Yeshua Messiah, Jesus Christ.
Believe and Trusting in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior
Filled with /or baptized with the Holy Spirit
'Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord; ‘- Acts 3:19
The word ‘repent’ (Greek: metamoeo) means literally to change one’s mind.
The word ‘converted' means turn around, change one’s course or to reverse direction.
Repentance can be divided into 3 sections per-say:
Thoughts: To realize the Lord is absolutely Holy, pure and just while we are unholy, defiled and corrupt. Having a godly sorrow - ‘For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation... ‘- 2 Corinthians 7:10
Conviction of sin - ' And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: ‘- John 16:8
Words: Thinking differently should be followed by speaking differently as well. -' For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned. ‘-Matthew 12:37
Confession of sins - 'If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. ‘- 1 John 1:9
Deeds: Our words of repentance need to be followed by deeds(works) of repentance.
This implied to turn from your sins to God that your sins may be blotted out. (Act3:19)
Please note that scripture does not teach justification by repentance but justification by faith.
A changed life is evidence of repentance.
2] Believe in Jesus Christ as Lord
Historical facts - Faith includes an acceptance of the significance of events as well as their occurrences; You have to accept that Jesus Christs was crucified, buried and rose again; Also believe whom He claimed to be, the incarnate Son of God
Personal - To appropriate that Jesus Christ is not only the Lord and Savior of the world but, that He is YOUR Lord and Savior. To change ones’ mind from thinking objective (the facts that Jesus is LORD) to think subjective (that Jesus is your LORD); This faith is to have personal confidence in Jesus Christ which leads to trust in Him. A trusting attitude also includes obedience action towards Him; Faith in Jesus Christ includes obeying Him as Lord as well as trusting Him as Savior. If you really trust someone, we will not hesitate to do what they tell us. That is why personal faith is followed by baptism and is essential for faith in Jesus Christ.
Verbal - Confessing our recognition of His Lordship to Jesus Himself is an act of faith that makes it possible to have His righteousness in our lives; Confessing it to others is a very necessary act of faith of being a disciple or follower of Jesus Christ. Scripture says if we to confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. (Rom 10:9)
Practical - To believe is to walk in obedience no matter the cost, and this faith is shown by acts or deeds of faith. Faith without works is dead and cannot save anyone. Faith is something we do rather than something we only have; (James 2:14-26)
Continuous - To have faith and believe is not just a step but a continuous walk with Jesus. True faith is what we finish with, not what we start with. Justification may be ours in a moment of faith; But continue in faith results in sanctification and glorification.
3] Water Baptism
According to scripture baptism was always followed only after one' repented and/or believed.
'Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. ‘- Acts 2:38
' Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: ‘-Matthew 28:19
' He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. ‘- Mark 16:16
• Baptism might be a physical event but with significant powerful spiritual effect. • The word “baptize” means total immersion in water
Baptism signifies the following:
• The end of the old life and the beginning of the new life • The death of a sinner and the birth of a saint • The burial of the old man and the resurrection of a new man
'In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ: Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead. ‘ - Colossians 2:11-12
'Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. ‘
- Romans 6:4
'I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me. ‘
According to the scripture only after repentance and faith in Jesus Christ can one be baptized, also to walk in obedience to the instructions and commands that Jesus Christ gave us in Matt 28 and Mark 16.
Here is an example followed from Acts:
'Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture, and preached unto him Jesus. And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized? And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him. ‘- Acts 8:35-38
Next would be being filled with the Holy Spirit or baptized with the Holy Spirit by Jesus Christ, which is a distinct separate event from repentance, faith, and baptism in water.
4] Being Filled with or baptized with the Holy Spirit
It should be understood that there are two distinct different instances and events regarding the Holy Spirit in our lives namely,
Receiving the Holy Spirit, and
Being filled or being baptized with the Holy Spirit.
It's not the same thing and the occurrences do not always happen at the same time. As scripture provides us with numerous examples of people who have received the Holy Spirit at first and only later was filled with the Holy Spirit.
Receiving the Holy Spirit happens upon conversion when you have put your faith and trust in Jesus Christ as described above.
Being filled or baptized with the Holy Spirit, first happened in scripture upon the outpouring of the Holy Spirit in the upper room when everyone present was filled with the Holy Spirit as promised by Jesus Christ.
This is the baptism that John was referring to when he said, 'I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire: ‘ - Matthew 3:11
This baptism can only be done by Jesus Christ Himself and no person can baptize you with the Holy Spirit or with fire.
Jesus Christ told His followers in (Act 1:4-11) to wait for the promise of the Father that ye shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days hence. The promise was that they shall receive ‘power’ (Greek: dunamis) after the Holy Spirit has come upon them; and you shall be witnesses unto Him and to the rest of the world.
'And, being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which, saith he, ye have heard of me. For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence. But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. ‘- Acts 1:4-5,8
What does this mean to us?
Being filled with the Holy Spirit, we will receive Power(dunamis) and have Authority over the powers of darkness and we will be able to operate in the:
gifts of the Holy Spirit ( 1 Cor 12:7-11 ) as vessels to Father God and it shall be given to every man severally as He will.
We shall bear the fruit of the Spirit, and
certain signs shall follow every believer.
The Spiritual Gifts we shall receive are the following:
'But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal.
For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom;
To another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit; Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord. And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all.
To another faith by the same Spirit;
To another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit;
To another the working of miracles;
To another prophecy;
To another discerning of spirits;
To another divers kinds of tongues;
To another the interpretation of tongues:
But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will. For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ. For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit. ‘- 1 Corinthians 12:4-13
The fruit of the Spirit shall be present and manifested in our lives:
'But the fruit of the Spirit is
against such there is no law. And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. ‘ - Galatians 5:22-25
The following signs shall follow every believer:
'And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.
And these signs shall follow them that believe;
In my name shall they cast out devils;
they shall speak with new tongues;
They shall take up serpents;
and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them;
they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.
So then after the Lord had spoken unto them, he was received up into heaven, and sat on the right hand of God. And they went forth, and preached every where, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following. Amen.’ - Mark 16:15-20
'A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh. And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them. ' - Ezekiel 36:26-27
